    Company president William O. McDowell was an important financier and business magnate and a distinguished founder of numerous patriotic and international organizations (see bio below).
    The Silver Chord Mining Company mines were located
    northeast of the mining town of Silverton, Colorado in Hinsdale County in the San Juan Mountains south of Uncompahgre Peak (elevation 14,321 feet). This area of southwest Colorado
    is highly mineralized (called the Colorado Mineral Belt) and was a major producer of gold and silver during the 1870s mining boom in Colorado. The Silver Chord mines were on the southwest slope of Empire Mountain east of the old mining camp of Yellowstone Gulch
    (along the North Fork of Hendson Creek at an elevation of 10,541 feet). Their mines produced ores rich in gold, silver, lead and copper within quartzite – this area was called the Galena (or Henson Creek) Mining District.
    William Osborne McDowell (1848-1927), a Newark, N. J. financier, business magnate and the founder of numerous patriotic and international organizations, and a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1913. The son of Augustus W. McDowell, William was a founder of McDowell Brothers and Company in New York City, an investment firm specializing in silver mining, railroads, corporate consolidations, and land speculation
    . McDowell reorganized the
    Montclair Railroad (N. J.), the New York, Ontario and Western Railroad of New Jersey, and the Midland Railroad of New Jersey, among others
    . His business ventures involved the
