The Crescent Mining Company owned the Crescent Mine in the Leadville Mining District (Lake County), just outside of Leadville on Carbonate Hill – the Crescent mines were very profitable, and located in an important late 19th – early 20th century silver, gold and lead mining lode.
Joel Parker (J. P.) Whitney was a millionaire and very important figure in Colorado (and Wyoming, New Mexico and California) mining history. He made a fortune in the California Gold Rush as a merchant before heading to Colorado Territory in the 1860s. He authored an 1865 book on Colorado silver mining that many believe helped establish Colorado statehood. He continued to make money in the mining and railroad industries, as well as real estate in California and ranches in New Mexico.
